Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Edward Holgersen, the Caltrans worker who was struck by a car while working.
Holgerson was standing behind a line of cones conducting traffic control for a construction crew on the Murray Road overpass of U.S. Highway 101 when he was hit by a 1998 Cadillac sedan. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently stable in an intensive care unit. Holgerson is married with four children.
The driver of the Cadillac was identified as 84-year-old George Hurt, of McKinleyville. The California Highway Patrol stated that drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor, but the accident is still under investigation.
As advocates for pedestrian safety, we encourage drivers to look out for workers on highways and to slow down in cone zones.
