We are saddened to hear about the death of Elijah Alvitre, a 3-year-old, who was struck and killed while crossing the street in San Jose. Our thoughts are with his family members during this difficult time.
The tragic pedestrian accident occurred on Sunday afternoon on the corner of Vine and Oak in San Jose. Elijah was being pushed in a stroller when a driver made a left turn without yielding and struck him and two other pedestrians, including Elijah’s 6-year-old sister. According to San Jose police, both the pedestrians and the truck had the green light, but the truck driver failed to yield. The other two pedestrians who were hit were treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and released later that day. Elijah was also transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
The intersection where the accident occurred does not have a left turn signal. Nearby residents told news outlets that they’ve nearly hit other pedestrians in the past. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with authorities in their investigation. He has not been charged.
This fatality is the 22nd pedestrian death in San Jose this year.
