ER Doc, Melissa Dowd, Killed in Fresno Pedestrian Accident

Fresno Police are still investigating a tragic crash which killed a 30-year-old emergency room physician resident. Melissa Dowd was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street with a friend. At the time the accident, Dowd and her companion were in a crosswalk at the intersection of Shepherd and Cedar avenues in Fresno. Fresno police have reported that the cause of the crash is still unknown. The driver involved in the accident is cooperating with police. The accident site is on a busy street less than half a mile east of where 7-year-old Donovan Maldonado was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver four months earlier.

Friends and colleagues remember Dowd as an accomplished musician and a talented physician dedicated to serving her community. Dowd, who was originally from Grafton, VA, had recently started her four-year residency at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. Prior to her residency, Dowd was a fellow with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and worked with HIV-positive orphans in Kenya and Tanzania.
