State and federal investigations have been launched after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received claims that 5-Hour Energy drinks may have led to 13 death and 33 hospitalizations in the past four years. The drinks come in small 2 oz. ‘energy shots’ and equal the amount of caffeine in two cups of coffee. Manoj Bhargava, founder and CEO of 5-Hour Energy, denies the claims that his product has caused consumer deaths. In a press release statement, he maintains that when used as directed, his energy drinks do not cause any harm. Still, critics are concerned with the health risks of children with heart problems drinking the product. Experts also warn that the energy drinks may be more hazardous than coffee because of the temperature.
