A new study released by the U.S. Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) projects that 2011 motorcylist deaths will remain at the same level as 2010. Based upon preliminary data, there were 4,500 motorcyclist fatalities in 2011 in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently estimated that overall motor vehicle fatalities had declined 1.7% in 2011, the lowest level since 1949. However, motorcycle fatalities remain one of the areas of highway safety that has not shown improvement. Twenty-six states, including California, reported an increase in motorcyle deaths. The number of deaths in California rose by 10% in 2011.
