A General Motors plant explosion left one person dead and five others injured on July 1, 2014. The plant, located in Marion, Indiana, employs about 1,600 workers and provides sheet metal assembly for General Motors assembly plants. Marion is location approximately 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The victim has been identified as James L. Gibson, 48, a contract employee at the plant.
Marion Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Greg Yeakle told reporters that chlorine dioxide was involved in the explosion, and that an investigation is underway. The entire plant was evacuated.
