San Francisco supervisors officially adopted a “Vision Zero” plan on March 18, 2014, setting a goal to eliminate pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities by 2014.
Pedestrian and bicyclist deaths in San Francisco have risen, with 21 pedestrian fatalities and four bicycle deaths in 2013. According to San Francisco police, two-thirds of the fatalities involving vehicles and pedestrians were primarily the driver’s fault.
Supervisor Jane Kim introduced the plan, which was approved unanimously. The plan calls for the implementation of at least 24 pedestrian and cyclist safety pilot programs in the next two years, which may include separate bike lanes or left-turn restrictions.
Vision Zero is modeled after similar efforts in New York City, where being struck by a vehicle is the leading cause of injury-related death for children under 14. The San Francisco plan will implement strategies used in Chicago, the U.K., the Netherlands and Sweden as well.
