Danika Garcia, 14, Killed in San Jose Bicycle Accident

Danika Garcia was killed in a San Jose bicycle accident on January 17, 2014. Danika was hit by a VTA light rail car that struck her near the intersection of Stokes Street and Southwest Expressway in San Jose. She was bicycling down the road around 7:35 a.m. when the collision occurred.

Danika was a freshman at Del Mar High School in San Jose, where she was headed that morning. According to her friends, Danika had a singing performance at the school that day.

The VTA light rail car that struck Danika was traveling north on the Mountain View-Winchester line. The train has since been impounded during the investigation of the accident. The location of the accident has trains at street level. A VTA spokesperson stated that the crossing arms were down, blocking automobile traffic, and warning lights and bells were fully functioning at the time of the accident.
