Fiery Crash on I-580 in Livermore Kills 1, Driver Arrested

Primitno Garcia, 53, of Livermore, was arrested for felony DUI and felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence following a fiery vehicle accident on I-580 in Livermore. One person was killed in the crash.

Garcia, the driver of a Hummer SUV, rear ended a Jeep Cherokee. Those two vehicles hit another two vehicles, causing the Jeep to burst into flames. The fire spread to the Hummer, but Primitno Garcia and his passenger, a man in his 20s, were able to escape. They were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where they were treated for minor injuries.

Reed Whittaker, 29, died in the accident. Wittaker was on his way to work at Highland Hospital, where he worked as an emergency room technician.

The collision was reported just after 10 a.m. just east of North Livermore Avenue. The freeway was closed for several hours as investigators examined the scene and cleared the road.
