Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the teenage bicyclist killed while pedaling through an intersection in San Jose.
The 17-year-old victim, who has not been identified, was biking through the intersection of Branham Lane and Vistapark Drive around 7 p.m. when he was struck by a silver Toyota RAV-4. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene. Witnesses noted damage to the vehicle’s front passenger fender and a shattered windshield. The victim’s shoes were seen on top of a mangled rear rim. The victim’s bicycle, a damaged single-speed, was seen nearby.
The accident was San Jose’s 40th fatal traffic collision of 2013, and the 25th involving a bicycle or pedestrian. The number of deaths is the highest in nearly a decade, according to San Jose police.
