Cynthia McGuinn, a partner at Rouda Feder Tietjen & McGuinn, has been named 2022 CAL-ABOTA Trial Lawyer of the Year, one of the highest honors granted to California trial lawyers.
“The CAL-ABOTA Trial Lawyer of the Year is awarded annually to a recipient exhibiting the best traits of a trial lawyer,” CAL-ABOTA explained.
CAL-ABOTA, or the California Chapters of American Board of Trial Advocates, has eight chapters throughout the state. Every year, its Board of Directors takes nominations for the Trial Lawyer of the Year from each of these chapters. The winner is chosen by majority vote.
It is not an easy feat to be named CAL-ABOTA Trial Lawyer of the Year—even the general criteria are difficult to meet. The awardee must:
- Be a proven, excellent advocate;
- Have a distinguished legal career;
- Maintain a reputation of civility, ethics, and fair play; and
- Have participated in a truly outstanding case result.
Attorney McGuinn has fulfilled each of the above requirements through her exceptional jury verdicts and trial work for a diverse client base, earning her the reputation for taking on high-stakes catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases. She has not only won numerous eight-figure jury verdicts, but also the largest personal injury verdict in Sonoma County history in 2015.
This is not the first time that Attorney McGuinn has been recognized for her legal advocacy. In 2003, she was named Trial Lawyer of the Year by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association; since 2005, she has been recognized as a “Top Woman Litigator” in California. A long-time member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, she was elected as the San Francisco chapter’s first woman president in 1998. In 2017 she was elected President of the ABOTA Foundation and in 2018, was elected by attorneys across the country to serve as ABOTA’s national president.
Attorney McGuinn is a member of several invitation only organizations: the International Society of Barristers, American College of Trial Lawyers and International Academy of Trial Lawyers. she is also a member of the Consumer Attorneys of California, and American Association for Justice. She has taught and lectured extensively on trial advocacy at law schools and professional organizations.
