A new law in effect January 1, 2013 allows California drivers to use hands-free texting technology to text while driving. The law allows drivers to both send and receive text-messages as long as the text-messaging device is fully voice-operated and hands-free.
Many transportation safety experts, including Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, oppose the law. Studies have shown that hands-free conversations are just as distracting to drivers as using a handheld phone. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2009 16 percent of all traffic accident deaths involved distracted driving.
