Founding partner John Feder was recently featured in Law.com’s “How I Founded a Law Firm” series, where he reflected on the career experiences, mentors, and values that helped shape him and Rouda Feder Tietjen & McGuinn over more than four decades of plaintiff advocacy.
In the profile, John discusses his early years of practicing on the defense side before joining Ron Rouda shortly after the firm’s founding in 1980. He reflects on the lessons that experience taught him about preparation, professionalism, and understanding cases from every angle, principles that continue to shape the firm’s approach today.
John also spoke about the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and maintaining a strong sense of purpose in plaintiff advocacy. He highlighted the firm’s commitment to taking on complex and meaningful cases while continuing to protect consumers’ access to the civil justice system, including ongoing efforts to challenge mandatory arbitration provisions that limit access to jury trials.
On what it takes to sustain a long career in plaintiff’s work, John said: “Make sure you have a genuine calling for the work, because passion is what sustains you when the hours get long and the cases get heavy.”
